It seems like religion is a form of self induced mental disorder that can lead to psychosis. Anyone else think this could be the case?

@Desertcactus are you hinting insults at believers or is your post question a GENUINE textbook observation of faith failures to promote healthy personality development?? Sadly I do not remember Piaget condemning religion only detailing the ages of magical thinking of early youth stages

Actually your observation of religious people is precise and clinically remarkable....good job describing brainwashed people and some who suffer severe mental illness caused by religions

No, only in extreme cases. Most of my religious friends and family are perfectly sane.

There are people with mental health problems in every walk of life. Obviously some fanatics probably do struggle with this.

That is very different than calling religious a mental disorder.

Every day many hours per day religious radio talk show hosts brand Feminism Atheism and liberalism "is a mental disorder." Your point is well taken that many religious people compartmentalize their beliefs shifting in and out of their faith lifestyles to conduct business jobs or personal maintenance like fixing meals or doing laundry not instructed by bibles or preachers. But the least little crisis like forgetting car keys or the death of a distant old friend sets believers into psychotic behaviors momentarily if not for days. Accordingly; religion is a mental disorder by textbook MANUAL definition

It's a social structure.

Calling it a mental disorder is offensive to people who have mental disorders.

Throwing the term mental disorder around to describe everyone you disagree with these days is common and I'm really over it.

Being wrong or being convinced of something by a conman does not make you mentally I'll. It makes you wrong.

I applaud your empathy and support you have given to religious patients. Your respect towards religious coworkers is noble and makes social order functional. Nonetheless; religious persons are dysfunctional enabling great evils upon others and often leads to self harm. The poster may have blathered out the words: mental disorder and psychosis without training or competence but I concur that delusions are much more than wrong beliefs learned from a con man. Cults have murdered billions of people in human history. I will always declare that religion was invented by the 1st shamans to rape women and brainwash boys into deadly raids upon neighboring tribes.
...this fact has OBVIOUSLY only gotten worse with weapons and communications technology

@Larry68Feminist my opinion of the matter has nothing to do with empathy towards mental health patients.

I have mental health issues and it makes me very angry when people use mental health as an insult to call people they disagree with mentally inferior.

There are many conditions that affect many people who are and are not religious. There is a difference in having a brain based disorder like bipolar, schizophrenia, PTSD or anxiety than believing what you were taught in your culture.

@MsAl the continued PRESUMPTION that religion is mere belief is more than mere disagreement here. It is NOT an insult to tell the truth that religion in many people is psychotic schizophrenic delusional and paranoid... Post TRAUMATIC Stress Response is not necessarily a disorder.....I am a Veteran and survivor from tornadoes car crashes and abuse from 2 brothers themselves abused by a priest and polio .... the priest victim is on low dose Haldol and my dead brother like FDR used ethanol daily for polio pain until death..... to minimize the greatest monstrosity RELIGION inflicted upon infant boys and lifelong rape of women is a great error or symptomatic of deep denial of psychic pain .... I count myself lucky to resist the racist religions of my parents at age 5 due to my love of my African American kindergarten teacher and have NEVER deluded myself with religious ideas ever since and thus never developed the mental illness of religion

This is absolutely true for the fanatic element (though I wouldn’t go that far for the average believer).

The average believers elected TrumpOLINI and the USA war crimes continue with zionism GREATLY escalated in Palestine
