This is an interesting read for those interested in the mind and why people may believe there is a god. The origins of Consciousness and the breakdown of the bicameral mind by Julian Jaynes. 479 pages. [s-f-walker.org.uk]

A good read. Followed neo-tech back in the 90s, another good read was "Atheism, a case against god"...by George H. Smith.

Uh, this book was the 70's.

@LatentumCattus yeah???

@HankSherman - Yeah. 1976.

@HankSherman - Sorry, the Joyce work was 1976. The Smith work was 1974.

Still. Same decade. Amirite?

@ToolGuy - LOL, you tease....

I jumped salty without checking my facts, I concede....

This time, I'm right, though.

You make me purr.

I am a now retired psychotherapist, and recall when this book became something of the rage some decades ago. I also recall when it was considered to have been debunked.
Admittedly, have not read it, and would be interested in a brief synopsis of the part, or parts , relevant to the god thesis.

It is a good idea, but the science is lacking.

WOW!!!! I know this book! It's old, but I think it still has a lot of relevance. I've spoken to a number of people in the field of psychology, and I've never met one who has read it. I did because I was studying evolutionary linguistics. If there's any truth in Jaynes' hypothesis, it sure does explain a lot!! For people who "hear" god and for people who "hear" voices (see: schizophrenia). I did see mention of it once on a website/organization dedicated to freeing people who are "locked into" a psychiatric diagnosis: mindfreedom.com, if you're interested. After reading this book I became convinced that there is no difference at all except the reaction of society. Thanks for calling attention to this ToolGuy!

None of them may have read it precisely because it came to be seen as junk.

I wonder if people who say that god told them ‘such and such’ thing are just coming out of their own thoughts? I also wonder if bring exposed to like minded people over a long period of time, causes people to fall in line with each other. (Just thinking back on times I spent around these people.). My sister who was schizophrenic was religious but, it was not god that she ever reported to hear telling her things.

You don't need to read 479 pages of a book to know why? They were all brainwashed by their parents, schools, society and peers. All babies are born without a belief or without prejudice of any kind, then brainwashed parents come in and so forth, voila, believe in bullshit! You are welcome, I saved you from wasting your time.

@ToolGuy don't really care, it's all brainwashing.

And quite the cornerstone for a gosh-darn fun SF book from the 1990's, Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson.

Cyberpunk meets the corpus callosum.
