Curious about the double standard of racism in the US. I am from a US territory where racism is subtle because a large portion of the population is mixed (european, black, native, etc) in race while hispanic and american in culture. I was watching a black comedian’s show the other day and could not help but think what would happen if a white or non black person would dare to say half of what he said about white people, but against black people. Is there a double standard in the US regarding racism? Is black racism celebrated against whites, jews, hispanics while any criticism against blacks is racist?

who was the black comedian? Some of them are known for outrageous statements. Dave Chappelle? Chris Rock?

Racism isn't the same everywhere in the US. It's not even the same in one city. It's a personal thing, but like everything else it responds to social reinforcement or the lack thereof.

Chappelle. But I have seen others. Cannot remember their names. Thank you for your comment.

In that case, what makes black bigotry more acceptable in american society than white bigotry, asian, hispanic etc.

The double standard is quite real, and disturbing it is. I know directly, many years ago I experienced such racism at work.

As a stand-up comic, I do try to avoid sexist/racist themes, but have even seen one guy (very unsuccessfully!) ramble on about chlamydia. Stupidty/insensitivity is just everywhere!

I do think it is possible to celebrate differences in a non pervasive manner. There lies the art of the performer. But once it becomes offensive and racist it is difficult to mend differences among races. Thank you for your answer snd good luck in your career.

No, because it's not possible to be racist against white people. Racism is more than just prejudice, it's having virtually every institution in society treating POC as 2nd class citizens. Here's a fellow directly addressing your issue, enjoy:

So they are trying to prove them wrong by doing the same thing. When does it end? When do we become american before any other identity?

It is possible to be racist against any race. If you make general assumptions against a group based on their color you are being racist.

No, no I'm not. Systematic bigotry and oppression is racism, and since no one has ever done that to whites, not possible for them to be racist.

I think, when in the context of comedy, there is more leeway. And yes black people can get away with saying more about white people but it's only because of the centuries of oppression that they have endured.

Like a consolation prize. How many more years are they allowed this in order to get even?
