There's an interesting and definitely grown up comic book series called "supergod" dealing with an alternate earth where national powers competed to create "superbeings" as weapons in power struggles.

These beings were pretty much godlike and, well, creating super beings with godlike powers didn't go to well for humanity.

It explores the idea that humans are hardwired to worship in some ways possibly as a communal rite necessary for a successful social animal.
