I won't attack everyone with a religious or "spiritual" view. I'm an agnostic skeptic, not a rabid militant atheist.

As long as your view does not involve imposing it on people by force or political means and doesn't involve preaching hate and sadism I generally won't criticize it.

Are you closing in on reality? Be careful, the further from the powertrip of Religion ..the closer you get to appearing rabid, militant, or Atheist ~

I am an atheist. If some mentally defective person tries to ram his particular god down my throat I become a rabid militant atheist towards that person. If a theist is polite towards me, I am equally polite in return.

I saw something once that really impressed me. A group of young jewish men on some sort of pilgrimage were being lead by a an old rabbi and they had to pass thru an area with a lot of scantily clad women. The didn't act like muslims or christias and expect everyone else to obey their views and accommodate them.

The young men formed a line behind the rabbi and closed their eyes with their hands on each other's shoulders, the rabbi, who was old, married and considered able to resist temptation, lead them thru the area.

Ok, those people may be religious, but I respect them for understanding their views are their problem, no one else's. Hence I won;t mock them or say anything negative about their views.

I'm agonstic and admit it's possible that any given religion may actually be right, even if I believe and feel they aren't. I only attack religions if I see them as causing harm or suffering.

So if I don't leap to the side of every anti theist who attacks a religion it might be because i don't see that religion as deserving it.

Please define "Rabid militant atheist".

Indeed!

Hello, you called?

So, any atheist who criticises religion is rabid and militant? Do you also equate "attack" with "criticise"?

Your 'agnostic skeptic" position seems like the typical 20th Century agnosticism and atheism. Don't know if you noticed, but that tolerance was rewarded by Islamic fanaticism, religious fundamentalism, rancid evangelism and alike, so, many of us consider it to have been a failed approach, and serious progress has been made in this century by exposing fraudulent religious history, theology, administration and practice and criminality, by criticising and "attacking" it (if you like) and many of us wish to see more and more of it.

So David, is it your view that atheism is teleological ie it is about eradicating religion? Or are you simply saying that cogent criticisms of religious views may help expose falsehoods before they take hold?

@Doubting Your either or question is a bit limiting. I would say I hope Atheism and the rise of secularism helps to eradicate religion over time. I would also say that cogent criticisms of religions, as you put it, helps expose existing religious fraudulence and falsehoods, and, linking back to my first sentence, may help prevent such falsehoods taking hold in people, going forward.

Bertrand Russell described the struggle against religion as not just going back to The Enlightenment, but all the way to the ancient Greeks. I agree with him, and it is a struggle. For a thousand years we lost; we call it the Dark Ages. No one criticised religion then.

I'll believe religions are tolerant when "In God We Trust" is no longer on our government issued currency 😮

Just a thought. Why would you tell us what you WON’T do?

What about telling what you think to open a discussion?

Some atheists seem to feel a need to attack any other pov. I'm not one of those. I don't feel a need to attack someone not trying to impose their views on me on spewing hate towards other views.

Christians liketto say that if atheists (and agnostics) didn;t really believe in their god we wouldn;t attack their faith. Well, no, we don;t believe in your god, we attack your faith because you try to force it on us.

I'm a believer in non aggression when feasible. If your views don't involve forcing them on me you can have them and I won't attack them, if your views do include using them to force your ways on me, it's open season.

@Techpriest Not all Christians have a view about atheists one way or the other. You seem to be taking a particular type of Christian and generalising.

Strange how you use ‘non- aggression’ and ‘attack’ was in the same paragraph.
