These are my "Comparisons of Religion and Fascism"
Both have one supreme leader...Both attempt to convince and convert unwilling non-adherents...Both are didactic and reactionary...Both demand complete adherence to doctrine...Both are incompatible with Democracy...Both have a militaristic hierarchy...Both make extensive use of propaganda and lies...Both employ symbolism...Both demand unquestioning obedience...Both employ oaths and ritual practices...Both expect of their adherents that which they themselves eschew...Both resist reform...Both appeal largely to the least educated (with the exception of their leaders)...
Religion is worse than fascism. As Robert Ingersoll observed, 'religion is slavery.' Religion seeks to enslave the mind, almost from birth. Ignatius of Loyola famously observed, "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you a man." This brainwashing of young minds is far beyond fascism. Religion implants ideas and concepts on the unformed mind that use guilt and fear to manipulate the captive child. Yes, there are similarities between fascism and religion, but due to the early childhood indoctrination, religion is much more difficult to walk away from.
I wrote this piece comparing the LDS to fascism some years ago, but it applies equally to religion in general
Both Professor Stuart Hall in 1979 and in 2004 by Dr. Laurence Britt wrote articles defining the major points in identifying extreme nationalism and or fascism, just as a thought experiment I took their criteria adapted and applied it to the LDS
You could apply it to the Masons, too. But do you mean to suggest that these characteristics would apply to PEOPLE who would, or do, take LSD? If you do, I can't agree. Although I have taken LSD on several occasions, I don't think I identify with any of the comparisons you offer. I wouldn't say the effects of LSD are anything like the experiences one would have under Fascism, and as for Religion, I once took "acid" in the presence of Divinity students from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia who were also tripping (on Mescaline). Come to think of it, they were very open-minded. That is one of the ironies I have always struggled with regarding the religious. I guess we have to be careful with our stereotypes. That's why I qualify every opinion I espouse as "my own opinion" and not fact.
@fishline79 What the fuck are you talking about?
@LenHazell53 I thought I was talking about the comparisons between Fascism, Religion and LSD. I guess I didn't express myself well enough. Sorry to bother you.
@LenHazell53 Forgive my stupidity. I read LSD and it is LDS.(I am slightly dyslectic) I assume that means the Mormons. Now I understand. No wonder I didn't agree! Of course you are right. BTW, I am a songwriter also. davidfishel.net
