I'm not usually one to post music; but I was listening to smooth Jazz and heard this classic by Pat Matheny; and had to look up the video to watch it and learn more about the instrument on it...

A Coral Sitar.

The instrument is a Coral Sitar (basically an electric guitar with a special rosewood bridge that causes all the strings to make a whirring sound, mimicking an actual sitar.) Vinnie Bell invented it for the Danelectro company in the '60s. It actually has a sound all it's own. They were very popular in '60s and '70s pop and R&B music (and no, not the Beatles. That was a real sitar). Many hits recorded on this instrument. This one had some modifications. This is one of my favorite songs on this beautiful instrument.

enjoy!
