There are people in my community who are using Covid-19 as an excuse to abuse people of Asian appearance.

Would it be reasonable to ascribe such behaviour to a reasonable fear of Covid-19 combined with an inability to think rationally?

It’s never reasonable to abuse anyone for any reason regardless of your inability to think rationally or not.

Agreed. I was asking about the reasonableness of my analysis, and I thank everybody who has contributed here for broadening my thinking.

All because Trump insisted on calling it the Chinese virus. Why aren't people of West African appearance being attacked for AIDS? It originated in the hinterland of what was previously the Belgian Congo.
It's not a fear of Covid-19 so much as an inability to think, let alone be rational. These are the boors that populist politicians stir up into a private army of rabble.

That Trump called it "the Chinese virus" says much about the man, all of it bad. Agreed, it is about an inability to think. It saddens me when politicians stir up fear and hatred in the general population as a way of serving their own ends. It reminds me of Sir Oswald Mosley.

" Could face hate crime charges." Where does the 'could' come from, why not, is going to.

Good question. I don't know enough about the legal processes in that part of the world, nor do I know enough about the mental health legislation there.

No its not reasonable. You have to add in the total failing of the states responsibility to educate everyone to the level of, basic responsible adult understanding.

Thanks for sharing that perspective.

It's in no way reasonable.

It just seems where our leaders go with their biased comments other sheep will feel they can follow.

See this article on what's already happened.

Thanks for the link. It seems to me that said Jose L. Gomez is mentally ill.

@anglophone It does look like the fella wasn't well. However anyone who thinks a virus can be carried more by one race than another is not firing on all cylinders either.

@RavenCT Agreed.

No...it’s wilful ignorance and inherent racism in my opinion.

This is not reasonable. This is ignorance of the highest order. If we have an outbreak of chicken pox will they blame chickens. I think not.

I am open to alternative explanations.
