I love your choice, @Cecilia2018! I find Tim Minchin to be genius, and he always makes me feel better. Have you seen his 9 Life Lessons speech?

Yes, I saw the video in YouTube. He is an amazing freethinker comedian.

I love Tim Minchin, but I can't come close to narrowing it down to just one stand-up comedian. Several I can think of specifically for their consistent ability to entertain me through stand-up comedy, in no particular order:

  • Tim Minchin: musically creative comedy; witty; some non-musical aspects that are also very funny
  • George Carlin: all around favorite; pushed the envelope his entire career; superbly funny
  • Greg Giraldo: very smart comedy that doesn't make you feel dumb; extremely funny; his roast performances were the best
  • Mitch Hedberg: great one-liners; great delivery; self-deprecating; very chill
  • Bo Burnham: I hesitate to call him a comedian, because at this point he seems so far beyond mere comedy; to quote a friend, "I never came so close to crying during a comedy special than I did at the end of 'Make Happy.'" Definitely one of my favorites.
  • Patton Oswalt: smart, funny, stays fresh, never disappoints
  • Brian Regan: clean, hilarious, the sort of comedian that other comedians love
  • Anthony Jeselnik: one of my absolute favorites; throws comedy curve balls that catch me off guard all the time; I love his off-beat comedy style and his delivery
  • Louis CK: consistently funny, great observational humor, relatable storytelling
  • Bill Burr: acerbic wit, pulls no punches, hysterically funny angry rants
  • Dave Chappelle: proven comedic skill, one of the most talented, very funny; I esepcailly like his earlier standup, but his more recent specials are solid and worth watching
  • Brad Williams: midget, not Wee Man (don't worry, Brad Williams would approve of this characterization); extremely funny, uses his stature in his comedy without that being a comedic stand-in; great storytelling
  • Nikki Glaser: such a funny comedian, one of my absolute favorites; doesn't shy away from shocking content
  • Natasha Leggero: great comedic style, very funny, makes dick jokes sound classy somehow
  • Ali Wong: one of the filthiest comedians on this list, and also one of the funniest; I don't endorse blue comedy for its own sake, but I've never felt like she was just going for shock value
  • John Pinette: I can't praise enough; one of my favorites, so talented, great comedic timing, terrific storytelling in is acts
  • Ricky Gervais: strap in, because this won't be boring; outstandingly funny
  • Lewis Black: very rant-y, very funny, always entertaining
  • John Mulaney: I don't like his acting, but I love his standup; he's a masterful storyteller and is always funny
  • Chris Rock: an all-around solid comedian with a proven track record; I always find him funny with great delivery
  • Dave Allen: had a great conversational style in his comedic delivery, very understated in tone
  • Maria Bamford: character/voice comedy that makes her distinctive in terms of style and delivery; very entertaining
  • Jimmy Carr: great comedy, weird laugh, has a reputation for sparring with the audience, quick wit
  • Bill Hicks: subversive tone, great anti-advertising-and-marketing bit; I didn't always love his delivery, but his comedy was always extremely funny
  • Chris Hardwick: a funny nerd with a quick wit, very smart
  • Eddie Izzard: brilliant humor, diverse in tone and delivery, never disappoints
  • Kathleen Madigan: an early favorite of mine, though I haven't seen much from her lately
  • Jim Norton: disgusting, filthy, will make you question your life decisions that led you to him; and yet one of the funniest people I've ever heard tell a joke
  • Mary Mack: wholesome humor, conversational style, sounds like she's coming up with what she's saying on the spot (though that's just her style), unusual delivery but very funny
  • Jim Gaffigan: clean comedy with a little bite, very family friendly, his earliest Comedy Central special is still one of my favorites
  • Daniel Tosh: such a quick wit, and very smooth on stage, I love his style and his delivery
  • Jim Jefferies: I'm convinced he can turn anything into a joke and make it very funny; something about his delivery is especially good

I feel that, because I included Tim Minchin and Bo Burnham, I should also include a few other musical comedy performers that I very much enjoy:

  • Garfunkel and Oates: Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci sing comedy jingles they write, and it's wonderful; "God's Loophole" is one of my favorites from them, but there are many great songs they've produced
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic: parody-song god! I don't use the word "genius" lightly, but I considering Weird Al to be a true genius.
  • Reggie Watts: creative in ways I didn't know were possible, often bringing humor to what he does; it's hard to explain his performances, and it's better if you just see it for yourself

There are many others I enjoy from time to time and some very funny people whom I've seen in non-stand-up capacity (e.g., talk show monologues or dialogue riffing, which I feel is a different style that opens the list up way too much), and I might be forgetting some obvious choices for favorites, but the ones I've listed are ones I'll watch whenever I see them on television or in a video queue online.

WoW thanks for sharing. I will check them out.

Wow, my first thought was how I could narrow it down from the ones immediately that came to mind, and then your list expanded the possibilities so much that I have decision fatigue! You're right, there are too many to pick just one.

@Lauren There are many that I like well enough but didn't add to the list, either because I'm not a huge fan or I've seen too little to know whether they're consistently good. Humor is so subjective and highly personal that it might be difficult to determine whether anyone on my list (that you're not already familiar with) will be to your liking.

That being said, if you enjoy "offensive" or "shocking" humor, I highly recommend Anthony Jeselnik, Nikki Glaser, Ali Wong, and Greg Giraldo (now deceased, but there's a lot of his stuff on YouTube and he was masterful on the Comedy Central roasts). I think Brad Williams could sort of fit this category, too. Jim Norton definitely fits, but he's very much on the fringe; you'll want to be 100% on board with disturbingly vulgar comedy — but if you are, he's hilarious.

If you like angry, ranting humor, I'd strongly suggest Lewis Black and Bill Burr.

If you prefer something a little more family friendly, G-rated or PG-rated comedy, I'd steer you toward Jim Gaffigan, Brian Regan, Maria Bamford, Mary Mack, John Pinette (deceased), and Mitch Hedberg (deceased).

If you like comics who sometimes rant about religion, I'd point you toward Jim Jefferies (not on my list above, but that's an oversight — I'll add him presently), Tim Minchin, George Carlin (deceased), Bill Hicks (deceased), Dave Allen (deceased), Ricky Gervais, Jimmy Carr, and Eddie Izzard.

@Lauren, @Cecilia2018 I just updated the list with a brief description of each performer so you have some idea what they bring to the stage.

@resserts It perhaps says something about my taste that the group I'm most familiar with are the ones who sometimes rant about religion. I can deal with offensive if it's rational (as opposed to those who just revel in being offensive), and now I'll have to check out "disturbingly vulgar" just to see where that line is. Have you considered starting a thread with these?

I'll definitely be working through your really comprehensive list, thank you.

@Lauren I don't like shock-for-shock's-sake comedy, either. I don't get the sense that these comedians are doing that, though. (There are others that I don't like for that very reason, however.) The cardinal rule in comedy is "it has to be funny"; you can say pretty much anything as long as it makes people laugh.

@resserts Exactly! Well, as long as it's intelligent humor.

[She throws in as an after-the-fact qualifier. (^.^) ]

@Lauren Yeah, I'm not generally very interested in juvenile humor. I can turn my brain off for some things, like Wedding Crashers, but when it comes to stand-up comedy I need something with a bit of substance. I like the jokes to catch me by surprise, but that means that I have to be anticipating something and then the comedian needs to be clever enough to spin the joke in another direction. That's why I like Anthony Jeselnik so much; he's able to throw me off most of the time.
