An unfortunate consequence of a modern electoral system is that the opposition seeks all possible means to impugn a candidates reputation, irrespective of the candidate's abilities and election manifesto.
For instance, John Kennedy was no saint, but he was a good president with the balls to face down Russia in Cuba and the foresight to promote NASA.
