I live by myself, work from home, and am an infrequent bar/restaurant guy. I am fortunate to still be working, the pandemic hasn't affected my income.

Since Philly went into coronavirus lock-down mode, I find myself spending more, much more, on local businesses for take out and food delivery-but not because I can't shop, I have plenty of food at home. Like any city, Philly is a city of neighborhoods, and mine-Mt. Airy-has a number of restaurants that are doing what they can to keep going and take care of their employees. Most of the ones open know, or at minimum, recognize me. They are not faceless corporate entities; they are all small, local, family owned.

My way of giving back and paying it forward.

Anyone else doing this?

No. Our income is not stable.

As soon as my finances are a bit more secure, I will do the same.

I do have my favorite restaurants which are now doing only curbside take-out, and they advertise their specials and menus. I definitely have a hankering for some of the specialties of my favorite places that I surely don't want to see go out of business.

As soon as my bank account has some breathing space, I'll be chowing down on Tiki Tacos and Paniolo BBQ, and other nearby eateries. Oh, and shave ice!

Since I've lost my income temporarily and am actually having to refund deposits made for some events which will not take place, I'm really having to watch my money.

I mostly miss being able to eat outdoors while listening to music. Hopefully only a few more weeks of eating my own cooking and dancing to tunes on my iPhone in my living room.

@ToolGuy My wedding business depends mostly on visitors coming for destination events. That has come to a complete halt.

There might be a few local weddings, but most are holding off, since we are not allowed to use the beaches for weddings, and we have to limit gatherings to 10 or less, plus stand 6 feet apart, and other challenges created by social distancing.

Same thing with funerals. Luckily we have had no deaths due to the virus on my island, and I'm very happy not to be supplementing my wedding business with funerals at this time.

I have applied for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, but the system isn't set up yet in Hawaii for independent "gig" workers like me, who have no employees.

Hawaii went from the state with the lowest unemployment to the highest all in a matter of a few weeks! It's crazy - no tourists - no income for most of us!

So, I'm watching my money carefully until the state comes through with help for all of us who depend on tourism for our livliehood - or until Hawaii welcomes tourists back - whichever comes first! 🙂

I haven't been working for a month now and my fiancee is supporting me until I can go back to work. I put my accounts on hold and my last paychecks, unemployment and the stimulus check, I am saving for a nest egg for when I go back to work, I will have some money. Crazy times!

I think what you’re doing is great and applaud it. ❤️

I myself haven’t gotten takeout once during this pandemic. I’ve been using it as an opportunity to become a better home cook, and I’m putting all the money I’m not spending (on food, gas, after-school care, son’s lessons, parking, etc.) into my savings account. I’ve already put a good amount away. I just have fears that the impact could result in job losses eventually, and I want to have a bigger cushion should that happen to me.
