Whether to laugh or cry? This is a question posed on Facebook:
"The trolley is barreling down the track towards five grandmothers. You can pull the switch and redirect it so that it kills no one. But you have to wear a mask to buy a toaster oven. What do you do? "
This was one of the first answers:
"In today's world, you are so distracted by the decision intentionally put before you that you plow into the grandmothers by accident. Later, you blame this on the government's requirement to wear masks, and you grab your shotgun to join the patriotic anti-mask protest. On the way, you are surveyed as to your knowledge of government and civics, and you find yourself to be among the two-thirds of the electorate who are unable to even name the three branches of the Federal government... Perhaps the grandmothers are now in a better place, for the future is looking grim."

This is not the true trolley problem. The main idea is to what extent does one go to reduce the number of people dying but will mean some will have to die.

Sad to say that in these surreal times, I can almost imagine that being a defense strategy, especially if the grandmothers aren't white. (And the trolley driver is a white supremecist.)
