While talking with people..I often say that, even though I feel the Bible is NOT the word of God...like in any book,song,movie,etc...there are beautifully written thoughts which I feel are relevant to a kinder, more Spiritual life. I tell them...if people could follow 2 (just 2) of the lines written in that book...they'd need few other pages. 1. "Do unto others as you would have done unto you"....and 2. "love thy Brother as Thyself".
I also like the "Love is".in Corenthians....anyone else have one they like?

I think this is my favorite...

Matthew 25:40-45 New International Version (NIV)
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

If there was not some parts of the bible which rang true, it woudl nto have lasted so long as it has. The problem is tht because of a few rue or beautiful passages, believers tend to fo a bit fanatical over it.

I like the wisdom of Ecclesiates.

Agreed, for the most part--there are some bad parts as well. But here are some gems:
"For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief" Ecclesiastes 1:18 (NIV)
"Do not say, 'Why were the old days better than these?' For it is not wise to ask such questions." Ecclesiastes 7:10 (NIV)
"...there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad..." Ecclesiastes 8:15 (NIV)

"Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another'. Proverbs 27:17

Some of the passages could be applied to every human in their every day lives.

I often recite the passage from Psalm 23:4 "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." Though my heart substitutes God for my friends and my loved ones and the courage they supply me.

The one I use most often is "let he who is without sin cast the first stone" and "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."

Oh, there are some great things written in a book as well as shit as well educated men took years ie over 2,000 to write it. I think there's a little bit of what man thought to be the truth in it too eg the great flood, flat earth etc.

I'm partial to all the begatting in Genesis. They begatted each others brains out.

I agree...wonder why those verses are not promote by Christians, as of late? I think people have replaced the whole Bible, with 'The Second Amendment!' That is all I have heard the Evangelicals claiming, for several years! And the NRA, concurs! And, trumpee, brings the 'cool-aid!'

There are some beautiful parts, to be sure. The story of Ruth is sublime, Solomon’s Song is a sensual oasis, and there are other excerpts worth considering. But it is all surrounded by such atrocity, horror and untruth, making it as difficult as panning for a gold nugget to find the good in the collection of texts. Still, if everyone could just look at this book as a work of fiction, written by men whose inspiration matched their knowledge, extracting the occasional useful passage—while discarding the erroneous and vile—would be so much easier. I grew up hearing The Byrds rendition of Ecclesiastes 3, taken from a book written by an unbeliever—an agnostic—as most biblical scholars agree that the references to God near the end are interpolations.

I totally agree with you. I always look at the bible as a book of fiction.

Jesus wept. Just kidding. I am an adamant atheist. That being said as a historian and a human I refuse to deny honestly that there are many good teachings and principles in the bible. It is when people take it literally that there is a problem. I will give my favorite. " The truth shall set you free." It actually, really did....from religion.

Agreed

I try to live by the Golden Rule. If the world followed that precept, we would be far closer to a perfect world. The Bible is the word of man. It is a record of man's attempt to understand the world, the universe, and our place in it all.
