“What need have I of a lofty roof?” a holy man asks a critic who says he can build a better house. “This that I have built is high enough for a dwelling which I must leave at death.” the poet Sa’di, C13th Iran.

Thank you Mandy. Seems like another Iranian/Persian poet to add to the list (Rumi and Hafaez). Interesting about the lofty roof business. Watching all the tiny homes stuff seems everyone is impressed with high ceilings. To me they are an absolute waste and energy glutton. Some of the shows have people who love the high ceilings so much that they are willing to settle for a very low ceiling loft sleeping area. Seems really stupid, to me.

@Allamanda Dealing with outside heat is another issue. Part of my house is a remodeled manufactured home with 7' ceilings. When I first looked at the place there was a mysterious hole (square) in the ceiling. I looked at the space and found a plug with a wall switch. Finally it was explained that there was a hood that could be opened to allow hot air to rise. One opened the windows and air would circulate out the ceiling vent. The plug was for a fan one could install to help move the air faster. Now, it is a hallway light. I also found that by putting cheap bamboo blinds on the outside of the sun facing windows it really helped cut the heat. The blinds allow light and even some views in but stop the hot sun from hitting the windows. Here we have cool nights so I open windows and put in some fans on timers (for the coolest part of the night). Everything gets closed during the day so it really helps keeping the house from getting too hot. It's about being proactive in setting the climate inside the house. To me when it gets above 72 degrees it's too hot.

@Allamanda The critical word is adequate. For the very cold areas a lower roof is necessary. Ever see a high ceiling-ed igloo?

@Allamanda You are right, absolutely not. Just that there are always exceptions. Thanks for going along.
