The term conspiracy theory was invented in the 1960s by the CIA to discredit the Warren commission investigating the assassination of JFK.
Since then it has proven a great tool for spreading misinformation.
However not all "conspiracy theories" have proven to be nonsense [readersdigest.com.au], and each should be judged on its own merits.
