I was raised Catholic. How many of you ex-Catholics knew then that Catholic doctrine believes that only Catholics have a chance at heaven? I did not know this until recently. I am finding quite a few others did not know either.

I was raise Catholic and went to a catholic school. We were told that Catholics were the ones getting into heaven. We were also told that there was no alcohol, no sex and no sin in heaven......So why would anyone want to go there???

It's hard for me to single out the catholic church with condemnation, as I am not only an ex-catholic but an ex-protestant. I know most of the churches out there see all those not belonging to their denomination as going to hell. If you don't have jesus in your heart then you don't get to go to heaven, and that means the white jesus is your master. Few catholics believe that way so they aren't getting into heaven. It's all nonsense, I've verified that.

In the RC schools my father sent me to, several nuns made very clear that only Catholics who die in a “state of grace” will go to heaven. And yes, they added that because we cannot know when we will die we always had to be in a state of grace.

@MissKathleen We boys had some fun. Nuns sometimes asked if we entertained any bad thoughts and to ourselves we said, “No, Sister, they entertained me.”

Go where?

Pretty sure you go into the ground, or to the crematorium.

I knew it as a kid in catholic school and it was my first big stumbling block to commitment.

Catholicism is in all points a medieval institution.
Even when you look at the pop Pope Francisco he is not changing anything, he is just saying the nice part, but he never denies the bad one, he just don't tell about it.
"We need to love our sinner brothers ("as long as they want to repent and change their ways" is the not said part)".

Catholicism still uses you as part of their propaganda if you don't ask for apostasy.
And officially apostasy is punished with ostracism (and if people don't ostracize you, they can be excomungated).

The principle that the pope is never mistaken is another one funny.
Even another pope cannot unsay what a previous pope said.
Based on this: The kingdom of Portugal still have right to enslave the infidel moors (arabs and blacks).
The definition and punishment for witchcraft is still official.
And other funny things

I had no clue, perhaps I shall have to go back to church after all. One can never be too careful, but then wait the other religions are saying the same. Oh, I am so confused.

At least your heaven has some amount of decency.

How so

One of the pope treatises of 1963 slightly changed that adding all Jews. I discovered that when having joking back-and-forths with a lapsed Catholic friend who never went, etc and would say being Catholic was his "in."

I don't know current (or not so current) cannon law but I know this used to be true. Protestants were heretics and could be killed for it. This was common knowledge when I was growing up although the killing days were past. I think ecumenism has moderated this to a great degree.

Well lets bring back the killing days because as the Moron said above, we can just convert in the next life. Weee.

I'm not sure if I was taught that as a child but I have heard that at some point. I'm Polish and in Poland most people are Catholics so I guess maybe it was just something that wasn't really talked about. My family was friends with someone who's a JW and also someone who wasn't Catholic but a different Christian denomination and I can't say I remember my parents ever mentioning anything about them going to hell, don't know if they thought about it or not. My father does like to call every Christian denomination that is not Catholic a sect and to him Catholics are the only Christians. I prefer not to speak about religion with my family as they're quite devoted and I don't want to upset them and I've got a feeling that hell would come up in that conversation as well and I'm not really sure what I believe atm.

Funny as I have heard that from some fundamentalist Christans that Catholics cant. when I asked why saints were mentioned

Very few practitioners of any religion ever know much about their official doctrine. It's usually just an identity tribe for most followers.

And you call yourself an ex-catholic dear, dear, dear you're catechesis beggars belief.

Look on the bright side, at the hour of your death you can recant and ascend into heaven, which may come in handy.

That's my point

In all religions/sects they believe that only those who follow that path can go to heaven. Probably only some Muslims believe that, due to be different paths, people who believe slightly different may go to Heaven. I remember a schoolmate of mine that believed only 144000 would go to Heaven and the leader of the cult he attended was one of them. You know what??? Whatever!!! There's no evidence that it'll happen, let people believe that if that's what they want to believe

Good point. I'm trying to decipher the teachings of young Catholics and consistency/experience

My mom is British, her uncle was a bishop in the high Church of England, my dad was Irish Catholic. When my parents had kids they baptized my sister catholic and me Anglican. When my dad passed away my grandmother was vary adamant about my sister praying for my father, but I was told not to bother because I could not go to heaven anyway, god would not listen to me...... I was 9
So yes I am aware of that, I kinda thought everyone new that, I also assumed that all Christian faiths felt the same.
