This is not a criticism but instead a factoid. Many wait staff do not declare all their tips so their income is much less than reported. That is basically how they get by on $2.35 an hour or whatever it is. I hope this article is shared far and wide and every person that serves food to Mr. Cruz gets to see it.

And most restaurant and bar owners skim from the till, to lower the amount they pay in taxes. So when wait staff under-report tips, it is just another example of imitation being the sincerest form of flattery.

That is why they are really getting burned on unemployment. That is based on declared income for tax purposes, which for most restaurant staff is a fraction of their income. With a normal income of $300 to $400, he’s getting $40 unemployment (plus the $600 until this week).

They also get a much smaller social security check because of it. It's very hard to worry about retirement when you're barely getting by.

Also more than likely they are really not getting more than their normal earnings when they get that 600 a week extra unemployment.
