Last week I posted an item on how I judged the measure of a truly great band or artist as opposed to merely a good one. A big thank you to those of you who responded with your own views on that subject, which I illustrated by posting a video of my own favourite band a-ha, live in concert.

I want to expand on that and acknowledge how even great bands need backing musicians who sometimes get forgotten in the credits, and that great though I think a-ha are, when they perform live they owe a great deal of their success to their backing band which travels with them., and in particular their ace drummer Karl Oluf Wennerburg, a fellow Norwegian, he has been part of their regular touring entourage since 2003, and also plays drums for Magne Furuholmen and Morten Harket in their solo performances outside of a-ha.

These 2 tracks, which are both from the same live concert as my previous post, Oslo Spektrum in 2010, highlights his drumming expertise which is second to none. Move To Memphis and We’re Looking For The Whales - a-ha - with Karl Oluf Wennerberg on drums...but I really wish to acknowledge the contribution that all backing musicians make to enhance the live music experience for the audience.

Two great videos and songs. I agree, the back up people really make this group as terrific as it is. I really like the Looking for the Whales song. Thanks for sharing and letting me know about this post Marje. I love this group!!!

I knew you wouldn’t want to miss it!

@Marionville You seem to know me quite well Marje. I do love a-ha, and I listen to their music almost daily. Thank goodness for youtube!!

@Redheadedgammy yes...indeed. It’s kept me going during lockdown.

I'm not sure what counts here, but from my small amount I have followed:

  • The Funk Brothers (various of them).
  • Chuck Leavell.

The Funk Brothers...very important to the Motown label recordings....Chuck Leavell, up there in the top echelon of musicians for decades...played with most of the top names.

Yes...I already know about them. Without them what would the “stars” be?
