The evidence suggests we just cease to exist when we die. Does this bother anyone? Since I have been an atheist for less than 2 years it still kind of depresses me.

The choice is to die, or never to have existed. Guess which one works for me?

Death is the ultimate peace, do I look forward to it, no, there is too much left I want to do, but do I fear it, no, because once I'm dead it is if I have gone to sleep, so there will be no regrets.

I jokily say I'll have just one regret, that I didn't have sex everytime I could have!

This is what makes our lives so much more. We have everything to live for here and now. Make the most of it!

No bonus round for you

It doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I see no reason to lament it, or become depressed by it.
It's just a fact. I didn't exist until I was born, it only makes sense that I
cease to exist when I die.

That's why we need to make the most out of this life! We don't know what happens when we die, most likely we just cease to exisit, but why worry about it? Just think of it as the next thing to learn. You may not learn anything, but that's learning something too. More or less...

I think if there's warning that death is coming is the scary part(terminal illness), but at some point you must realize you're not going to be hurting anymore and that everything and everyone dies and there's nothing special about any of us where that's concerned.
Yeah, we're not going to see the color blue anymore, or have another cup of coffee, but then too the stresses will be vanquished also, bills, pain...sounds get further away, big sleep.

You just need a good dose of dehumanization. Realize the insignificance of earth, then the life on it, your species, and finally yourself. We really are no different or more significant than cockroaches or flies.

Look on the bright side. you won't care because you will be dead. like the longest dream, you don't remember. sounds like bliss. there was a time when you weren't born yet and that doesn't upset you.

Well, eventually the Sun will swell up and engulf mother earth (No worries, still 5 billion years away), not only that...there is a possibility the universe will keep expanding forever and all stars will eventually die out and everything will be an infunite empty and cold space where life will never emerge again forever....I think that is a bit more depressing

Evolution has us and all living things the want to stay alive at least long enough to procreate. When thinking about death I believe that kicks our mind into survival mode and since everything alive dies, (read no immortality) , the thought of self preservation is strong. One way for most people to deal with it is a belief in an afterlife. Until this ingrained mindset is over come , (like most us here have), it is a very depression thought.

The only reason that it shoud bother you would be that if you are facing death as a young peoson being deprived of most of the experiences of life. You are not facing hell. It is simply reality. think of it as peaceful oblivion.

I was thinking about your reply. Now that I'm not religious anymore, what do you tell a dying 18 year? This isn't happening in reality, but if it was, what is your response to this dying person?

@SalC I would tell him that I think that is sucks that he will not have the opportunity to live a full life, but that there is nothing that we san do or say to alter that fact. Just ell the young pson that there are people who care about him/her and who will stand by as long as they can. That is the best we can do.

It does make for a reason to make the most of this life.

I dont' really worry about it myself. Although I may never be remembered after i am gone, I still knwo I have made the world mor epositive than negative by my actions and existance. That satisfaction is enough for me.

The miracle is right here right now. What a waste living your life for something that does not exist. I became happier myself with not having to accept the rules that bound critical thinking. This is it, make the best of it!

At least you aren't burning in hell for eternity being tortured by a maniacal sadistic god?

It doesn't bother me in the least. The only afterlife is in the things you do here, and in the memories of those who have known you.

Think of it this way, were you aware of yourself before you were born? If not then it will be the same when you die. We have to do what we can with the time we are here, no more!

Ayn Rand used to say death doesn't bother her because she won't be there to experience it. Lol.

I hear you brother. I feel the same way but when that happens try to redirect your focus on your goals/values/interests . It's because this life is all we have that it is so special. Don't waste a F'n moment
