The potential medical applications of this technology is fascinating. I don't think we'll see anything nearing AI singularity in our lifetime, but we well could see major neurological therapeutics come from this.

That was my first thought. Even the (admittedly scary) ability to think to/with another person would mean everything to someone who's lost speech.
