Years ago, shortly after entering California from Oregon on I-5, there was a sign which read "rough road next 10 miles." Someone changed it to "1000" miles. They were not wrong.

When I lived in Maryland, there was a stretch of highway that, for years, had signs up that read, "Pardon our progress." In all that time, there was never a change in the bull-dozed sides of the highway, no lanes added or removed. Never a visible sign of any progress. Since there was a number on the sign, I decided to call it one day and inquired about the progress I was asked to pardon. I got the sort of noncommittal response I expected, but it was still fun.

Down south it frequent and they mean it , like Alabama

Considering that there are always more standing around talking and socializing than there are actually working, it seems to be having an impact at least. LOL
