These are my grandfather's medals from WWI; they are 100 years old. He was a backwoods boy from Oklahoma who probably had not gone gone 50 miles beyond his home. He left a new wife and went into a new world that he never imagined. He had no thought--and no way--to falsify a doctor's excuse for bone spurs or other fake medical conditions.

He suffered from mental illness after he came back. These days, we call this PTSD.
I do not have my father's medals, but I know he earned some because I do have a copy of his discharge papers. He was a widower (first wife) with three kids when they called him up. At 26 and with his kids, he was drafted late in the war. He went.

Suckers? Let history be the judge, not Donald Trump.

It is great that you still have the metals your grandfather received in WWI. My father was also drafted in WWII and was a POW for 38 months in Korea. He was one of those people Tumper dislikes.

The alleged quote of TrumpOLINI against us vets is a likely way TrumpOLINI rationalizes avoiding the draft ....only the Army&Air Force drafts soldiers & air crews ....my Navy and USMC never drafted any sailors or marines .... we all have heroic reasons for becoming trained to kill/be killed.....my draft # was 269 and only96 birthdayS were conscripted in March I enlisted 20 Nov'71 while TrumpOLINI was buying real estate and violating housing civil rights of citizens ...we vets DEFEND the CONSTITUTION while TrumpOLINI is a mega thief traitor to USA

I wonder if it ever occurred to the shit-head president that nearly everyone has a veteran in their family. My uncles, my grandfathers, my husband all served while corporal bone spurs sat on the side lines spending Daddy's money. I do not know what I am going to do if he wins this election, I really don't. My mind has no more capacity for his shit.

That's right. His family is one of the very few families who has never contributed anything to this country.

@Gwendolyn2018 I traced my family tree back to 12 revolutionary patriots. I am a card carrying member of the DAR. I think I might also be one of those suburban house wives that is going to get put on hold when I call 911 to report my rape and murder. I guess that means I am supposed to vote for that piece of crud, but it aint happening.

One of many "real" people, willing to do their duty. They all earn my respect.

@Gwendolyn2018 I too disparage war, but that did not stop me serving my military time. However, I don't "glory" in remembering it as some people do. On Remembrance Sunday I grieve as I remember those who were maimed and killed. Then quietly leave.

Chump and his defenders disparage the Atlantic report because it's based on anonymous sources. Well, what do they expect when a lieutenant colonel is forced into retirement because he testified under subpoena to Congress (along with his twin brother for good measure!), when generals who serve with honor, dignity and integrity are dismissed with a disparaging tweet, when anyone who puts their sworn duty ahead of the party line is hung out to dry?

Our service members deserve better from a Commander In Chief, and Trump not only does not, but has never deserved the office.

There is no better judge than history. And soon Trump will be sharing it with those he disparaged, the long perspective is not kind to the untruthful.
