This is what my 87 year old dad gets up to when no one is watching. He does this with a back that has had three discs "cemented" because they were fractured and he can only stand for limited amounts of time before the pain gets too bad. And, if my dad says he hurts, I know he's in some real pain.
Btw, the sky is this color due to the wild fires to the north, east and south of us.

I experience my worse back pain when I'm doing nothing. I can go at it on the roof all day and be fine, until I get in the truck or get home and sit/ lay down....then it's killer!
Fortunately for me, unlike your dad, it only happens once a year or once every 2 years. I've decided to do maintenance with Chiro, maybe it won't happen again..... Also your Dad has 25 years on me and I've never busted a vertebrae or had an accident.

We kids have always said that dad will go with a hammer in his hand. I don't like that he does this kind of stuff, but I have had to make my peace with it.
@Joanne He will go doing what he likes and loves. A good way to live.
@dalefvictor : Sadly, my mom is the opposite. She has dementia and chronic pain. A horrible way to spend ones last years. And, it's even sadder because she truly believed that her god placed it on her heart that he was going to spare her this kind of ending.
My grandma had dementia as well but did not have the chronic physical pain, so my mother is far worse off than my grandma was 
.
- Given the dementia in my family, I had my DNA evaluated; fortunately, I came in as a lower risk for it than my mom and her brother showed. I don't know if my uncle, who is 18 months younger than my mom, is showing any signs, though. The last time I saw him, he wasn't.
@Joanne Are you in the position of taking care of them if things get worse? I ask because I am taking care of my wife, it is an act of love and I do not fault her for this. But it is hard to be the one who has to do everything. At least you are around your lived ones, my mother passed some ten years ago.
