I will vote. I have always voted. Voting is NOT enough. Fighting against what is wrong in our country takes activism. That means contributions of time and money, that means speaking out to friends and family, that means engaging in public dialogue... all of these things are done by very few Americans. I am ashamed of a nation that has decided it is OK to cage children. I am ashamed of a nation that puts convenience over science and the health of its citizens. I am ashamed of a nation that has repressed every non white, non christian, non straight, and non male member of its population for its entire history and even with all of the information in the world at its fingertips, this nation continues to follow all these paths. I am ashamed because I am a citizen. I will also fight because I am a citizen. I will strive to make this a place to be proud of. But the current stench doesn't seem to motivate enough others.
There is a bit of "vote-fetishism" in this country. We are so indoctrinated into the concept of "market place of ideas" that we become passive consumers of political platform; they create it, and we choose the ones we like the most.
We have to understand that we should be the creators of the political platforms and agendas. We are not passive consumers, but should be active creators of the public forum and opinions.
In order to get there, we have to realize that we, to varying degrees, are prisoners of the shared beliefs that may or may not match with the external realities.
In the 70's there was a popular slogan, "Question Authority." I think it should be, in our times, "Question Capitalism."
