Need a new forum for "WRITERS"

I've never done well with writing assignments since I have been writing my stuff. Even now with what I am watching on masterclass.com, I am reluctant to perform the assignments.

I do try to apply what I am learning to my stuff. And no doubt my uncounscious is doing same. Not some not-connected bit of prose that prolly will be a waste of my time. But using my characters, I might actually improve something that I am working on.

Yet, however,... Occasionally I respond to some such kind of thing and go with it. And have had some fun stuff.

Had a good run with a first line from:
[thefirstline.com]

And: I have become concerned about the information being collected by agnostic.com. Who are these people and why is this free? Other than to collect information about who we are?

Thank you all for posting. Some fun advice. And ideas for new stories. So, I hate you all for that.

I often wake for many minutes during the night, and usually lie in bed for many minutes in the morning, thinking about particular scenes. I then, usually, spend the first hour of open-eyes typing as quickly as possible.

Upon review I find I have averaged 500 words a day for months, added to many different stories. Got 600 last night before bed, about two new ideas. Good and bad.

Being diverted/distracted is my biggest problem. Too many ideas, too often. Makes it difficult to complete as many bits as I could. The good part is lots of the ideas are about similar topics. The downside is they don't often enough mesh with current plots. Blessed and cursed at the same time.

So, I attempt to avoid outside idea-prompts that will take me to new places too often.

Yet: I did enjoy this firstline.com's suggested firstline:

George pressed the call button and said, "Mrs. Whitfield, you have a visitor."

((( The least explicit of my explorations🙂)
George pressed the call button and said, "Mrs. Whitfield, you have a visitor."
Mrs. Whitfield pressed her button, “What part of ‘Don’t call me Mrs. Whitfield’ did you not understand. I'm no longer married to that asshole.
Sorry, Mrs. Whitfield. Should I send him up?
What’s he look like?
Tall, dark, and handsome.
Daryl, I am going to do everything I can to get you fired.
Yes, Mrs. Whitfield. My name is George.
Not any more, Daryl.
George, Mrs. Whitfield.
Looks like a Daryl, talks like a Daryl, acts like a Daryl.
Should I send him up?
What’s his name?
Daryl.
Goddammit!
Whatever you say Mrs. Whitfield.
Daryl, you are virtual. I can get your programing changed.
I doubt that Mrs. Whitfield.
Send him up.
Yes, Mrs. Whitfield
Thank you Daryl.

Writing is daunting, and you're not going to get it right away. Rather than an assignment, pick a reasonable amount you want to do and a time you'll do it. I start work at 1:30PM. Why that? Why not? It doesn't matter what time. Start with 250 words, which is the average page length. The best advice I ever got was from Poul Anderson. Write a page a day, and at the end of a year you'll have a 350 page novel. Rewrites come the next year. Whatevere it is you'r edoing, cut it down to manageable chunks. Trust me, I'm just as reluctant, but you can teach yourself to be tenacious in the face of the reluctance. Good luck.

Thanks for that story.

One way to do it is write down ten random scenario's and roll a dice and mix it up... Or just throw the scrabble letters down too.. .. write lots of words and mix it up.. Something will likely spark the creativity.. Listening to music is useful I think. Or going out into the real world and taking notes mentally on people.. Observing them and their characters and see what you can pull out of that for inspiration.. Often the real world is he best pool .. think of someone who pisses you off and why ? use it but not overtly ... just take that angst and turn it into part of a character and the depth will become "real" because you based it on the real ... using real life ... nothing for me is more inspiring than people that piss me off in one sense. They are a dream and it's cathartic to deal with and process them emotinoally for you.

As far as Agnostic.com goes.... honestly i think you overthought there ... 1. What have they to gain .. (unless the US Christian right is about to start bumping people lol) 2. What personal information are you sharing and why? Is it really dangerous ? 3. How could this information be used against you or humans as a mass.. To be honest when i look at these questions i see flaws .... I think nobody is used to something free & from what i gather from the attitudes of people on here, they are on a mission to pretty much to do the right thing and really think about their responses. The CIA haven't got the depth for this never mind the Christians lol.. That's my view.

Good::: Flipping a coin always helps to focus one's true interest. But should never be used as an actual decision.

I've been reading Mark Maron's Subtle Art of Not Giving a fuck. Great book, but one part in particular hit me good and will help you here.

Action is not only the result of motivation, but it's trigger.

So basically, if you have writers block or just can't think of anything interesting.
... Shit on a page. Just get some words, any fucking words, and put them on paper. Keep going. In no time the ideas and concepts all flow from you freely. Write about your breakfast or describe how ugly and dumb somebody who cut you off in traffic is or how subbing your toe left you bleeding on white carpet.
Just shit on paper then thow it away once the gold stars coming.

And I doubt there's anything shady going on here.

Yeah. I don't have any block. I figger if a story is stalled it is because my subconscious is working on it and refuses to let me dirty the water. So, as Stephen King explained that one of his recent successes was summarized when he was very young, and he knew he was not ready to write it. Some stuff takes years.

@Jacar fully and absolutely agree. My advice is more about getting writing at all to come out, as far as trying to force a creative ending.

@RossBenevent and good ideas all. Recently changed an outline to remove one day/chapter and combined two others and all kinds of stuff started making sense. Recently i watched a vid an oscar winner saying it took him 4 years to complete the outline. ------ Took 5 years for Emma Thompson to finish the script for 'Sense and Sensibility.' I should have "Patience and Perseverance" ::: That is a title for something great, i am sure.

"Not giving a fuck." Think about that. I want to fuck. I want to give as many fucks as i am allowed by life and/or opportunity. How can THAT be wrong?

But!!! I do understand that "not giving a fuck" is a clear indicator of no interest in the subject.

I prefer the positive observation: "I really wanna fuck that." And other such exclamations.

How can that be wrong?

@Jacar he makes the same point in the first chapter. He explains how the book is about choosing what to give your fucks for. And how to actually let go and not give a fuck about something you don't want to give a fuck about.

Our @admin is not collecting your data.

Far fetched notion that they could use it for gain .. Not much they can gain from the data on here to be fair 🙂

Correct, all we have is registration info and the public "who liked what" data. We don't have (nor will) have advertisers with cookies/etc.

thank you for your response. i am not a paranoid. But given the craziness of FB,,, I would be stupid to not be concerned. You?

More thoughts:
Actually there are probably millions of internet servers that save records of the connections that have flowed through to agnostic.com Connections monitored by the functions that track and record those logs. These log files are being kept for years. And they are for sale.

whenever i search for anything, in any way, at least thousands of machines log the connections. And some the actual data.

It is possible to track a user's internet connection history by probability to determine when a user changes addresses (email, ip, user names, ...) and locations, what they will choose to change and where they will relocate.

And it is possible to locate, most of those connected to the net in any way, at an actual physical location, within meters. And with photos posted to FB and other such places, are most dangerous, because "smart" phones are defaulted to add the date/time/geolocation to EVERY photo. You should disable this "feature."

And so on

But, don't get me started. 😉.
