I really want to tell people I’m atheist, but living in the Bible Belt I feel like I’ll lose friends and family if I do 😕

We've all been there, I told my very catholic family first, all others eventually found out. Those who love you, will not stop loving you. But if some do stop, it means they really didn't before, so screw them.

I doubt there is anyone who knows me who does not know I am an Agnostic. Yes, it carries a pretty heavy price, and if you are not well-practiced in defending your views they will walk over you like a wet rug. But no one learns the art without practicing it. You can stay in the shadows and hope that enough people come around to the point where it is more socially acceptable, or you can join the ranks of the dragon-slayers . . . . That is your personal choice . . . looking back I never made a secret of it, from around the time I changed my views when I was about 28, to now. It all hinges on how strong you are. Me, I prefer being a hellion and rocking the shit out of the boat.

It's okay to stay in the closet when your an atheist. I tell people I no longer practice anymore.

So don't tell them. Just as one would not tell them about other private opinions. Unless you are prepared to bear the consequences, one can not put the genie back in the bottle. Courage has its price. So does privacy.

It's so liberating to finally let it be known.

You aren't obligated to tell anyone. But if you insist, you don't need to label yourself. You can tell people you don't believe there us a god. You can tell them you don't practice any religion. And you don't have to tell each person the same thing — you can tell each person in a way they can understand it.

Politics and religion, up until about 4 years ago,was something polite people Never brought up in conversation! Why does one need to parade around now with a sandwich-board sign?

I grew up in one of most conservative parts of Ga. I was raised in primitive baptist church where they would drag people to front of the church to get saved whether they wanted to or not so I understand completely. If I told my family what I thought I would be mocked and ridiculed.

Everybody is different so if you do not want to tell people then do not tell anybody. It is your life. Just because I am an open Atheist and everybody knows I am an Atheist does not mean you have to be open about it. Do what is best for you.

Don't tell any one you are atheist. Just tell them you are not interested in devil worship. Most christianity doesn't know Jesus is Lucifer the devil, so it might be something you would have to explain to them. It is all in their bible.

I don’t feel the need to tell people it’s more like I just hate when something bad happens people will always be like just pray and I’ll pray for you and I hate people try to get on the topic of god I just don’t know how to tell them to shut up I kinda just nod and say yeah.
