What the orthodox faithful may never understand is the difference between belief and identity. They hold the opinion that what they believe in is "who they are," while castigating as "sinners" those whose sexual identity doesn't square with their worldview. That said, it would seem likely that, in the hearts and minds of most Christians, a fear and loathing remains--they hate the sinner for who and what they are, not for what they do.
