This would be a step in the right direction. Also,we need ranked choice voting and the abolishment of the electoral college.

Since the electoral College is in our constitution, the chances of ot being abolished is less than slim to none.

However I'd be interested in why you think it should be abolished

@Alienbeing

The constitution has been amended many times.

Because it creates unequal representation.

It makes it so that a vote in Wyoming is many times more valuable than the vote of a Californian.

@RoboGraham I know the Constitution has been amended many times, and that reply means nothing.

I hope you know that to amend the Constitution it requires a 2/3rds vote in the House and the Senate, and then it additionally requires radification of 2/3rds of the individual State Legislatures.

Do you really think there i eve the slightest chance a 2/3rds vote can possibly happen?

Last, I ama aware the Electoral College makes a vote in Wyoming more valuable than in any more populas State. Know why? It is becuse we ARE NOT, nor ever have been a Democracy. We are a Republic, and the differenes are HUGE. Note that in the Senate each State gets 2 Senators. Democratic? No, and that fact once again makes a Wyoming Senator more valuable per person than a California Senator. Each State is guaranteed at least one Representative in the House. Geuss which States have 1 House Representataive? They still again make a California vote less valuable.

When our Country as formed the smaller States were fearful that the larger States would make them irrelevant, they still have that fear, hence the Public, not a Democracy.

Unequal representation is not a consideration in the Republic in which you live.

@Alienbeing

I understand what it takes to amend the constitution and I know that it is difficult and it is a long shot. Still, it ought to be done. Just because it's hard doesn't mean we should give up.

Yeah, it's a republic with very flawed democracy. I happen to be a believer in democracy and support efforts to increase democracy and equal representation.

Right, the Senate is a horribly unequal body. So the small states already have a massive advantage in that half of the legislator. I'm okay with that. To even things out, so that we don't continue having presidents get elected who did not win the most votes from Americans, the EC needs to be tossed out. The president ought to represent the entire country and therefore ought to be elected on an equal footing by the entire country. Just because it was this way up to now doesn't mean it must stay this way. They added in the option to amend for good reason. We need to adapt with the times. In this day an age, it is embarrassing that our country is so blatantly undemocratic. How are we supposed to be the shining example of democracy to the rest of the world when we can't even get it right here at home?

"Unequal representation is not a consideration in the Republic in which you live." Yes, and we are going to change that, for the better.

@RoboGraham I agree that merely because something is hard does not mean it should not be persued. The point was it would be impossible, not just hard. Ther is no scenerio that 66% of the Federal Legislature or 66% of the States would agree to abolish the Electoral College. Maybe manh years in the future, not a chance for the foreseeable future.

Many people do not think a pure Democracy is a good idea. You can want it, but no chance currently.

@Alienbeing

Things change. The younger generations are much more sensible.

We will eventually abolish the EC, achieve statehood for DC and Puerto Rico, and institute ranked choice voting.

@RoboGraham Things change, and perhaps one day the Electoral College will be done away with, however my point was and is, that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

As for youngr generations being more sensible, that is your opninion.

Last, perhaps you are unaware that the voters of Puerto Rico have voted NOT to be a State two separate times. Albiet a recent poll (not a vote) showed a preference for Statehood. Just because some Democrats want Puerto Rico to be a State does not mean a majority ofPuerto Ricans agree.
