Cops directing traffic for churches. WTF?

I am actually pretty tolerant of religious priviledge and care less than I should about the goodies it gets but this morning on my way home, I see THREE cops cars out there and a cop stopping traffic so 3 people could cross the road.

I've seen this before when there was a festival at the greek church and have no issue because I consider it a public event and if churches paid taxes I also wouldn't care but for some reason this really irked the shit out of me.

Am I blinded by my irritation as to WHY this is acceptable?

They normally hire off duty police to man these locations and it provides the police with a little additional income. I am ok with this.

I would be fine with that as well but they are in uniform and using the cruisers which is city property

You're not blinded. It happens down here to. There are two mega churches in my vicinityand both use cops to direct traffic on Sundays. I guess they're keeping the public safe but paying for that "privilege" would make more sense. Imo

I know of a few churches down here that cops do this for. But I know that most of them pay for the cops to direct the traffic
