Sad News! Ronald Lee Ermey passed away today at 74.
He was the Drill Sergeant in the movie Full Metal Jacket!

Update: My apologies. My military source got the day wrong. It was yesterday (Sunday)

I copied this bit of trivia from a website called moviemistakes.com. It sounds believable to me,a really good example of Method Acting.

Trivia: Ermey was convinced that the scenes in boot camp wouldn't be believable unless the actors were actually frightened of him. According to the commentary on the blu-ray, when he was acting as the technical adviser and training them to drill, or whatever he was training them to do, he never raised his voice. As soon as the camera was rolling, he started screaming at the actors. Much to Ermey's pleasure, the fear you see on the screen is real. Many times in the shooting the actors would become so flustered by Ermey that they would blow their lines. Ermey recalls that he's seen the other actors in the film around Hollywood from time to time, and they still won't speak to him.

It would had been very interesting him opposite a james dean as a recruit.... I heard the story of dean playing opposite a very religious actor and dean constantly cussing in front of him to really piss him up during the scenes together... I think it was to his father in "Rebel without a cause". But this is not about dean this is about the Greatest Gunnery Sargent ever and Best Promoter of the Corps. Semper Fi, We Squids Salute You.

He was born to play that character because he did it in real life even if never made it to that rank, he received the honor for his promoting of the Corps in movies. I will miss his honest acting even if limited to cop or military. Semper Fi Jarhead Maximus and I thank him for his Service and Sacrifice. All Squids everywhere will miss him.

If anyone cashed in on being type-cast, he did. Loved him in FMJ.
