There is an article in the New Yorker that is about UFO's. I did not read the whole article, it is interesting. Question: What would you do if a Space Ship from another world came down and sat on the baseball diamond in Central Park, New York? I am interested in what you would really do not the first thing coming to your head. Let us make the assumption that they want to talk and they are not endangering our civilization, after all if an advanced being wanted to kill us we would be dead.
I'd be happy and excited about the scientific advances they might share with us but also worried that we'd screw it up and some dumbass with a gun or a bomb would try and kill the aliens.
I think they are smart enough to realize that by showing up they had better have their shields up for we are stupid enough to shoot at them. Those who would do the shooting would be surprised by the return fire.
In this hypothetical scenario, I think that I would lay low. I'm not interested in being abducted (unlikely) or trampled by crowds in Central Park (more likely).
Whatever happens, I'll catch it on the news.
I would seek medical help. Since, while it may just be possible that visitors will one day arrive here from another solar system, it is so highly unlikely that we, as the only sample we have, will ever reach other star systems, even imagining impossibly advanced technology, it is very unlikely that anyone else will, ever. It is much more likely that I have become delusional, medical help needed.
That would be my inclination as well, but I think that in this hypothetical, we have to assume that your therapist - indeed, every therapist - sees the UFO also. Now, you could assume that we are all experiencing a mass delusion, which is plausible, but the question remains: from whom would you seek medical/psychological help?
Indeed, if all sane people see a thing, one must either assume oneself sane, or join the crazies in denying it, despite the evidence (ahem Flat Earthers, I'm looking at you.)
@David1955 I would never have said that UFOs don't exist, in fact such is the human capacity to see things, which are not there, or mistake things for other things that it would be surprising if there were not any. But we are not talking about UFO sightings, but actual contact on the ground. While in the opposite direction if there really were E.T.s out there close by, then you would expect that the first plausable evidence would come not from earth but from astronomy, radio finger prints and the like yet we see nothing, so the opposite goes that you must explain the Fermi paradox.
I would thank my lucky stars that I don't live in New York. They would learn a lot more about human society from those in New York, what drives people, etc. If a space ship landed at the local stadium where we have county fairs, etc., I'd be happy to stand in line to share my philosophy of life and perhaps ask questions they could answer for me.
I would provide safety for them.
I would introduce them to our species' most intelligent achievements.
I would study their language or way of information processing.
Personally, I do not know if we are being visited or not. Personally I do not care. I was asking because I wanted to know what you, a person, on this planet would do if IF, one showed up and it would not be possible to say it was false that it was not here. The logic of where one of these things would have come from is impossible knowing what we know about Physics at this time, believe me I have been trying to figure it out for years. Looking at articles under a search of Google Scholar. There is a Company working on a design for FTL travel, but they have hit a number of problems. However, having said this the Math says it is possible. We cannot do this. So Thank you for your comments so far as I believe all of you are correct. Having said that what would you do if a ship landed in Central Park, New York? Assume this is true for sake of argument. Would you stock up on toilet paper, would you sell your stock, would you try to hide in a church, what would you do? Thanks.
