I haven't used one in many years but we had one when I was a teenager.
We used to search old homesites in extreme northern AZ looking for artifacts. We never found anything valuable but it was fun. We found a few household items -- the biggest was an old broken rope maker. And we found small things like old wire and railroad spikes. Lol.

It was never an attempt to get rich but it was a good excuse to go out and explore in the hills. I admit that we always checked the chicken coops where people might have buried their valuables (as if everyone else hadn't thought of that and checked too. Ha, ha.)
The old home trash piles were more productive.

I am thinking of starting a new hobby. Going to watch the pawn shop.

@MsKathleen
The most money we ever found was a jar of coins one time that had been stolen from a bake sale at our local school. Ha, ha.

My grandfather homesteaded NE of the Grand Canyon in the area and his old ranch where my mother lived was one of the places we checked.
The trash dumps again were some of the best.
My mother remembered candy bottles in the shapes of cars, etc. We never found any whole ones and of course the metal detector was no help. Ha, ha.
But it was good to explore and reminisce

We half killed ourselves one time getting to a homestead in SW UT -- down a small cliff and up a canyon. And when we got there we found the remains of a Model-T car(!? ).
It turned out that if you came in from the other direction it was a lot further to go but it was mostly flat -- it could be driven.

Ah, the fun old days.🙂
I wouldn't depend on finding anything valuable with a metal detector. But it's fun and adds to a hike.
