For more than a year, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, who is second in polling for the GOP presidential nomination in 2024 after Donald Trump, acted as if the pandemic were a game. He mocked, fired, and even arrested state data experts, resisted and undermined mask mandates, downplayed the severity of the pandemic, and let ordinary Floridians bear the human costs of his failed leadership.
His actions telegraphed an overall disdain for common sense health measures. Last month, DeSantis issued a "blanket pardon" for businesses that refused to comply with local Covid-19 measures, and he successfully sued the CDC to re-open the cruise industry in the middle of a surge of cases. At various points last year, when the danger of the pandemic seemed distant or receding, DeSantis declared premature victory, taking victory laps only to see cases, hospitalizations and death surge again weeks later.

I have a running joke with my brother who lives in Florida. Some years ago we were marveling at some ridiculousness from Florida and he said to me that there is something about the state - every time another state seems to be a candidate for most stupid state, Florida will be like "hold my beer, I'll be right back", and will re-assert its dominance in this area.
Every time I hear more of this malevolent idiot Governor they have (including his irrevocably disgusting persecution of the data professional they had minding their Covid-19 data who just wanted to perform with integrity in the midst of a life and death global crisis, to do her part), I don't know what to say.
It's probably too over the top for some people, but this Floridian trying to push back against one aspect of the insanity there, early in the Pandemic, really resonated with me:

The angle on the conversation was that it was just dumbfounding how bad this was.
One of the folks, who has a PhD from a US university, and was not born here, and doesn't know that much about Florida or any of the rest of it, just said "I didn't know. I'm sorry". It was just so pathetic she just didn't know what to say.
These fucking idiots (Desantis, et al), are actively putting their base in harm's way.
They're all too shortsighted to see that between 45, McConnell, McCarthy, Cruz, Rubio, Scott, Desantis, and the rest of that cabal, they're killing all their support.
Although, it could also be argued that the reason they're changing election laws at the state level is precisely because they actually DO know this.
They're making it possible for them to maintain power without popular support.
They're killing off as many of their followers as possible before they (the followers) realize they've been duped and turn on the liars.
It's just convoluted enough to be true.

Here in SW Florida, most ER's are closed now except for Covid patients. ALL electives surgeries have been cancelled. DeSantis's ignorance and arrogance is KILLING people.
DiSantis is a disgrace for Florida and all thinking Floridians.
