Re-Incarnation: Life will be better next time around

Got chatting to this guy originally from India. We both missed the bus into the city and had 20 minutes to talk whilst waiting for the next one. Somehow we got on the topic of beliefs and re-incarnation.

His English wasn’t perfect but I’ll give you the gist with some grammar corrections.

“We have the richest and poorest people in the world. I was one of the poor. I got very little money working in the carpet factory, maybe like a dollar a day in your currency while the owner of the factory drove in a Rolls-Royce.”

“He would visit and speak to the workers. ‘Next life you will be like me, you will be wealthy and have a wonderful wife or two.”

“We worked hard hoping for the next life as we lived in poverty.”

“I always hoped for the next life but than I realized that belief was false. It kept that man wealthy and us workers poor.”

It made me think. Religious and spiritual beliefs can give meaning (in the context of social contact, a sense of community) but those beliefs are abused. They make some people very wealthy and the others very hoping. Religious beliefs can oppress people.

It’s not just belief systems that believe in re-incarnation and oppress. There are other ones out there. Cults, we got some in OZ just as you have. They entice people by offering ‘meaning’ and again often in a communal environment where the cult leader screws every woman in the commune and the participants in the cult make huge payments to the leader or work for free. And of course we got the suicide bombers awaiting their fate in anticipation of 7 virgins.
