Does anyone know of any research on the correlation between intelligence and depression? The brightest people I have known throughout my life have battled depression for life in most cases with improvement in anti depressant medication but never I got over it. When I have had success with meds inevitably I stopped because I didn't suffer the lows as before medication but I didn't feel like me. Unfortunately I believe periodic low points are integral to who I am. Thoughts anyone.

I doubt that there is any substantial research on a relationship between depression and intelligence. Depression is primarily a matter of dysfunctional brain chemistry. Thoughts, stresses miserable physical circumstances, and catastrophes can help to bring on and sustain those imbalances.. Having been severely depressed at least twice in my life, I know what brought it on and how I got out of it -- once by lasting it out, and the other by deliberate action.

Intelligence is just another imbalance of chemicals. Why not suspect if ones chemicals are already imbalances that those chemicals also are out of balance another way.

Not surprisingly my low point was during adolescence, tough time for most folks. As I grew in age experience and wisdom I learned to catch myself slipping before dropped into the hole. I stop taking the Celexa which is pretty helpful, when I get the strong urge to make new music and need/ desire to be creative. Suppose I should be thankful I am still around. Two fellas I went to high school with committed suicide last week in separate incidents. Two former band mates killed themselves, my cousin and partner in crime drank himself to death, one of my serious high school girlfriends slit her wrists but survived. This is a small town maybe 7,000 people in the city limits. That seems disproportionate to me. Four friends overdosed on heroin or synthetic opiates. That is accidental suicide. I can't put a finger on why so many people in a small town born in the same year could be so disenchanted with life.

I think intelligent individuals are more attuned to the world around them and are more critical of themselves in terms of measuring up to their personal standards.I have been depressed most of my life and have never been truly happy or content .I have found medication works better for clinical depression, rather than what I call invironmental depression caused by ones life situations. medication never helped me, and I did not like the side effects.I always envied people that are truly happy ,These people don’t realize how fortunate they are.

I have no problem with depression and I consider myself quite lucky. There has been and still is considerable study into this idea. So far most of the conclusions drawn here and there remain in debate. Some of that is because of methodology issues and some over selective sampling and suspected bias. Here is a brief, interesting, and informative article.
