Today I had a job interview. I already knew that the woman was very religious - I checked her FB page. I was heartened by the fact that she called me in despite my, obviously Jewish, last name.

Well...she asked me if I had a FB and told me that it is the first thing she checks about prospective hires.

I rushed home and made damn sure that there are now no Atheist or Humanist or anti-Republican posts that are public!!

My daughter had done the same cleanup when she was looking for teaching jobs - an abundance of caution.

Anyone here do the same?

Facebook is a place where I've become pretty unpopular... I can't resist posting memes that are starkly atheist, or openly debating with believers. Over time, my friends list has shrunk from people deleting me, or me deleting them... Lately, I've tried to be a little more pallatable to others, by sticking to science and nature with my posts; but naaaa... I've never cleaned up to try and be more presentable to anyone. Luckily, the people in my professional circle are aware of my atheist, and still value me anyway.

I could never get a job that I was educated for because I refused to join any Religious, Political or Educational Alumni as a end to my means of pursuit. I ended up in a Construction Union for 25 years where I was able to enjoy the challenge of a new adventure every year. You were basically challenged with a different situation every day because as we would always comment that no two jobs are the same. They never were and when we did it their way we made more money and never were resentful concerning the concede. We walked away with a little more in our pockets to have to go and find another adventure. We lived by the motto that you were only as good as your last 5 minutes and you could get laid off at any time without notice. That was a challenge and a very memorable learning experience.

Quite a few business people have been keeping profiles on LinkedIn for the last several years as a matter of course, and refer any prospective employers to that site regarding employment information, rather than FB. You can also find interesting information there for employment if you are so inclined.

So sad, discrimination that is hard to proove. and if you get a lawyer and force the issue, and got the job she would just make your life miserable anyway. I agree with clauddvon.fake it till you prove.

I would play up being religious if it meant putting food on my families table. 😉 I know enough about the topic to speak intelligently. They don't know that I could care less about religion and the only reason I'm feigning interest in the subject is that I know they're discriminating asshats. 😀

I won’t “friend” people I work with on Facebook mainly because of the things I tend to post. I also refuse to name where I work on my profile. I don’t know if some jobs want or require you to do so, but I don’t know how that could be legally enforced. It’s nobody’s business what I do or like in my personal life away from work.

Yes!
I volunteer and part of what I do is bring people together... all different kinds of people.
I had decided to take the step & put up my Atheist profile pic on FB. Then, that very same evening, whilst volunteering, I met a lovely gentleman who is involved with helping a youth group at a church. Now this guy was kinda cool and may not have cared, but as soon as I got home, I switched my profile pic.
It's not about hiding who I am, but just not throwing it in people's faces.
It's a fine line.

On social media I am careful. Don’t post much. I work for a large financial institution. They all check social media to see what is being said. Personally when hiring people I don’t care as long as they are good at what they do and will fit in, personality wise, in our group.
