The education culture war is raging. But for most parents, it's background noise [npr.org]
I suspect all the noise we hear on various topics are actually created by conservatives as a way to ‘divide and conquer.’ In the end they are either bogus or a way to get people riled up.
It's worked well on the conservatives I know. Too many want the classroom to echo their small minded ignorance.
Those that wish to whitewash history etc. are free to home school. Teaching reality better equips kids to become part of the real world.
Unfortunately, we then get what we have, a lot of ignorant, foolish people that think only 'they' know the truth.
@JackPedigo There is a book called, "Lies my Teacher Told Me" that would shock many of those ignorant people. I remember questioning some of the crap I was taught as a child.
@MizJ My late partner was encouraged to ask lots of questions by her mother. She said when she was old enough to think she thought religions was silly. However, she was always getting notes and even visits from her teacher complaining of something she said. The stories I have heard but her mother always supported her.
@JackPedigo In re to US history it seemed odd to me that people would just give up their land and its resources. Halfway through high school we moved to the rural South, when my history teacher lied about slavery I would walk out of class and go see his wife in the library. The librarian let me shelve books and sometimes tutor the kids in Special Ed. They had no idea what to do with me but tolerated me leaving class as I was still in the building.
@MizJ I think most of us wish we had been as aware and assertive at a younger age. I think it takes a special personality.
@JackPedigo Aware, yes. Assertive? More like being pissed off about being lied to.
@MizJ Sometimes being pissed off is the best motivator.
