Shouldn't those who call themselves humanists protect human life just as bird lovers protect the lives of birds ? They also protect nests containing eggs from which chicks have not yet hatched, because they know that inside those eggs are birds-in-the-making.

I am not a humanist myself, so it is logical and consistent for me to be pro-choice when it comes to the abortion of fetuses. But I am also pro-choice in the question of post-natal abortion, for example in cases when newborns are severely disabled. But this is a horror idea and a taboo for all humanists. - - Strange inconsistency.

As a humanist, I support human values, harmony between humanity and our environment and also the quality of life for all. My choice to decide what is best for the quality of life for myself, my fertilized egg/fetus/ and even the life of the person responsible for impregnating me.

If I fear that my child and I would live in poverty, or be in harms way of a violent household or angry impregnator not ready for parenthood, or other realities of life at that time. it's up to me to make good choices, weighing all the facts and options.

Also to be considered is the quality of life of an unborn child who is not expected to have all its organs or other challenges which would not only make for a poor quality of life for the child, but also a financial burden to the family and likely extended to tax payers by relying on government resources.

It’s an inconsistency when you make it so.

@Matias Your rule for consistent — Consistent would be: human life has intrinsic value, yes or no, no matter at what stage of development…. — is your rule.

In your bio you wrote — And like almost all features of human life and culture, …. — and put on blinkers.

What in the actual fuck?
Some parents of severely disabled or profoundly premature infants can choose to not administer "heroic measures" to extend life but no one is actually killing infants.
For claiming to be Pro Choice you certainly whipped out the forced birth talking points.

And I also think people should be allowed the option to painlessly exit as allowed in some countries. Suffering isn't noble. It is just suffering.

We allow our animal companions more dignity at the end of life more than our human friends and family.

The egg in the nest is an independant entity. Its health and welfare are not directly connected to the health and welfare of its female parent.

A foetus in a womb is not independant of its female parent. It cannot survive without that female parent, and its existence has a massive affect on that parent.

The two situations are so fundamentally different that an attempt to 'connect them' in order to declare pro-choice humanists 'inconsistent' is utterly ridiculous.

If I had a pet female dog that was pregnant, and that pregnancy was causing harm to the female dog, then I would want that pregnancy terminated. This is a 'choice based on priorities' and is certainly not inconsistant with being someone who cares.

@Matias No - either you define human life as beginning at conceprion, or at some later stage - and act according to that definition.

There is nothing invalid, or inconsistent, in declaring that the 'start of human life' comes when a foetus becomes capable of self-sustaining that human life. You may not personally like that definition, but it doesn't mean those who feel it correct are 'inconsistent', just that their views differ from your own.

The word humanist is somewhat creepy if you think about it, kinda sounds like a name for someone who eats human beings.

Not a humanist either here, and also pro-choice when it comes to abortion procedures.
