And don't forget the stock holders too. I've worked in a hospital pharmacy for way too long (about to start my 44th year-6 more months and I'm out) and I can attest to that. A fair amount of drugs have been derived from plants over the years and they still cost a fortune and yet when the patent goes off the price goes through the floor. What price life?

Just a few stats, Life expectancy
US...78.79
China...76.91
India...69.66

I'll take Western medicine over Your brand of magic everyday and the facts back up @pralina1

The point was the pharmaceutical industry pushing drugs and we doing abusing drugs have caused overuse of drugs and there are alternatives for minor ailments. I have known two people at work including my ex who never have taken anti-biotics, they know what food and other changes they needs to make to stay low and allow the body to recover.

Secondly, Indians, Indonesians, Chinese, Malaysian are not dying or Western are not living longer because of medicines. There are multiple factors like pollution, living standards, struggle for basic necessities etc. The daily and continuous struggles for life impacts human life expectancy. In the US we do not have daily life struggles such as cooking gas, electricity, shelter, food... let alone nutrition and healthcare. This makes a big difference in life expectancy.

As far as just medicines and healthcare are concerned, India has been the largest drug manufacturer of the world, most brand names drugs that we use are probably made in India and places like Thailand, India and Costa Rica have high quality health care and dental care - much more cost effective than in the US with no compromise on the quality. However I admit that this is available only to local people who can afford. Cheaper for Western visitors but still expensive for locals. I go for dental care in India and the dentist's waiting room is full of people for Europe. The dentist employs 37 dentists, has 48 chairs and occupies 3 floors of a building. He has an office in Dubai and has a private jet. In my 36 years in the US, I have never seen a successful and large dental practice here. What you read here about India is slums and poverty.

Your argument is well taken and I agree with the point that US life expectancy is higher than China and India. But just wanted to tell that medicines is not the whole story behind expectancy. I can discuss when I see civil arguments like yours. Some people just don't have the ability to argue decently.

Pharmaceuticals save people's lives and greatly increase the quality of life for many people. Pharmaceuticals have probably saved untold millions of lives. They are a tool and like any tool they can be misused/abused.

That's right. Both things are happening - drug abuse by people but also pharma sales pushing health care providers to prescribe and sell more. We all know about the opioid crisis.

What ?
Ok .
Two words : insulin . TPA . I have more but I ll shut up .

"Holy basil.... This herb is commonly used in India as a traditional medicine for diabetes. Studies in animals suggest that holy basil may increase the secretion of insulin. A controlled trial of holy basil in people with Type 2 diabetes some years ago showed a positive effect on both fasting and post-meal blood sugar."

I lived in a large family of 5 uncles and 9 aunts with 33 cousins. We had diabetes from father's side. This came to at least 17 cousins, 6 uncles and one aunt. Only one died in '50s. All 5 grandparents lived into their mid-70s and early '80. None went to an allopath. We grew up on homeopathy and Ayurveda.
