I think the problem here is that they're not talking about the same thing. Ben is talking about what policing should be and the audience member is talking about what policing is. But basically, why policing is a public good and healthcare (or at least basic healthcare) isn't is a really good question. They're both protections for members of the society.

I know it's not the same in every town or city but where I live what policing is and what it should be are the same. I imagine that couldn't be said now in places like NYC, or Chicago.

@Captain_Feelgood Could one of the reasons for that be that you live in a predominantly white area?

@ChestRockfield Mmm, not really. From what I see it's proportionate to the rest of the country.

@Captain_Feelgood Proportionate to the average of the rest of the country? Or proportionate to the composition of most of the other cities? Either way, the color of your skin may have something to do with you thinking policing is what it should be regardless of where you live...

@ChestRockfield I plainly said "proportionate to the rest of the country". The color of my skin has nothing to do with my opinion of MY local Law Enforcement. I plainly said LE HERE where I live is what we think it should be. I never said policing is what it should be regardless of where you (or I) live. Don't put words in my mouth.

@Captain_Feelgood Well, you just said, "LE HERE where I live is what we think it should be" so are you putting words in someone else's mouth? Who's "we" in that sentence? Are they also white? How you're treated by police ABSOLUTELY can affect one's opinion of the police, and skin color ABSOLUTELY can affect how one is treated by the police. Maybe you don't think the color of your skin has anything to do with your opinion, but maybe that's only because your skin is white...

@ChestRockfield Ahh yes... you just know me sooo well. It's as if we grew up together. 🙄 The points Ben made are quite clear and succinct. If you want to start wagging your "you must be a racist" finger at people you know absolutely nothing about, do it somewhere else. I see you're nothing but a clueless troll. Welcome to the 'ignore' list.

@Captain_Feelgood I never said you were a racist. I was saying that maybe your perception of how good and fair policing is may have something to do with the fact that you're not a member of a group that has been historically discriminated against by police.
