Sorry, I bristle with the mention of 'assisted suicide.' He obviously had a reason and the word 'suicide' needs to be changed to reflect the changing ideas about this issue. All people should have the right to end their life especially when faced with suffering.

I don’t understand why you “bristle” at the word suicide and why the word needs to be changed. I really hate euphemisms and was just commenting to someone today that the word “died” seems to be one that people can’t bring themselves to say…using “passed” or “passed away” instead. All the TV announcers are talking about at the moment is that The Queen has passed away….well no, actually she has died!

@JackPedigo's " Making all decisions concerning the ending of my life myself" I cannot yet think of a single word to encapsulate all the ideas within the quote marks. Maybe it will come later or others could beat me to it

@Marionville I 'bristle' as sometimes the word suicide is warranted. I posted the letter I sent which got printed in all 3 of our local papers. I have become a huge advocate of Death with Dignity and the program here known as endoflifewa. Absolutely, death is death and we need to wake up to that fact. My partner would correct anyone who used the word pass. She would ask what did they pass, gas? We say a rechargeable battery as having died when it really has 'passed' to a lower state. Even the NY Times obituary column refuses to use pass as it is not reality. I feel it is often used by religionist to push their agenda. A great video, "Obit' discussed this issue.

@Marionville, @Mcflewster A book came out "Final Exit" and a practice was created called the Hemlock Society. The society is now known as 'Final Exit.' Basically it gives reasons for promoting 'Self-deliverance.' more importantly it demonstrates ways one should not use to end their lives. [en.wikipedia.org]

Sad , But at least he was able to carry through on his own decision to die.

Yes…it’s high time we could here in the U.K. too.

@Marionville And everywhere.

@Marionville Sometimes, I'm surprised how backwards some supposedly 'civilized' countries are.

@JackPedigo Yes….sadly.

I had not heard that he died. Very sad, but at least he had some say in it . Breathless is one of my favorite French films
