This is just a little rant, so you can skip it if you want.
I went to a lovely memorial service this evening for a friend's father. The deceased's brothers and some friends took turns telling really touching stories about him, and made me wish I'd gotten to know him much better. What ruined it was at the end a man got up and proceeded to preach. Saying this may be the only chance some of you get to hear the good news about Jesus Christ. Then he told us all what filthy sinners we were, and how magnificent god was, that he would even consider forgiving us for even having the audacity to be born.
Anyway, at least nothing kept me from leaving at that point. I had want to speak to some of the family, but I really can't stomach that style of preacher.

Some years back two of my sisters died 5 months apart of strokes. The one sisters funeral was clever, smart, and pleasing, until the final speaker...Each one of her 7 children spoke of their mother, their lives, personal tid-bits...and then a friend of their dad got up and spoke the most revolting, ugly, condemnation I had ever heard, in the love of god...was the ONLY UGLY PART of the service, a nephew and I both got up at the same time and walked out...

Exactly! This was a beautiful thing, until the preacher got up there.

Some people feel the need to be told they are worthless. I don't get it and will walk away from anyone trying to tell me that I am.

Thanks for sharing this E. I'm sorry that you had such an experience to ruin the happy memories. When someone imposes this kind of aggressive and threatening religion on others, it can only be considered a form of abuse!

A liberal Facebook friend recently told a story about that happening to her when she and her friends attended the funeral of an atheist friend who'd committed suicide. They were all trying to celebrate his life, but the preacher ruined it all by preaching hellfire and brimstone.
