Also, the periods 14 days before and 14 days after the solstice, since these marked the earliest sunset and latest sunrise, respectively. Hence, the immaculate conception (6th December) and 3 wise men bearing gifts on Epiphany (5th January)
Also, since the Roman census was during springtime, Jesus would have been born around Easter. Imagine the confusion amongst Christians if they had to celebrate his birth and death simultaneously!
