It is not they don't care, they are unaware. They just don't think empathetically. The world revolves around them only with no emotional ties to memory, so memory is shit. No forethought, just enjoying the moment, unaware there are other emotional beings around them who remember shit.
All narcistic behavior can be put down to a single flaw, a lack of empathy.
