Positive News!
What went right this week (as of January 26, 2023): ‘positive tipping points’, plus more

New research fuelled climate optimism, fossil fuels reached a peak, and six lifestyle choices were found to slow dementia, plus more good news

This week’s good news roundup

  1. ‘Positive tipping points’ offered hope
Most people are familiar with climate tipping points: one component of a fragile ecosystem collapsing, sparking a chain of irreversible disasters. But academics from the University of Exeter in England have tipped the notion of tipping points on its head, claiming that breakthroughs in low-carbon technologies could trigger an unstoppable wave of decarbonisation, or what they call positive tipping points.

  2. The world ‘reached peak fossil fuels for electricity’
“It’s all over except the shouting.” That’s the conclusion of a report into the role of fossil fuels in the electricity sector. Published this week, it suggests that the world has reached peak fossil fuels for electricity generation. It forecast solar and wind capacity to increase at least threefold by the end of the decade, “pushing fossil fuel electricity into terminal decline”.

  3. Meanwhile, the renewables race stepped up a gear
A global race to supercharge renewables appears to be under way. According to The Times, the EU has drawn up plans to create a multibillion-euro package of state subsidies for green energy companies and electric car makers.

  4. Colombia called time on fossil fuels
The bell tolled for fossil fuels in Latin America this week too, with the Colombian government announcing that it would no longer approve new oil and gas projects.

  5. Gaza opened its first female boxing club
Women and girls are fighting prejudice at Gaza’s first female boxing club, which opened this week.

Microinverters are tiny inverters that may be installed on each solar panel. When compared to the typical string solar inverter, which is mounted on a wall at a convenient distance from the solar panels and linked to them through DC wire, this is a major improvement. The inverter in a string inverter system is responsible for transforming the DC power from the panel string into AC power. Each solar panel has its own micro Inverter, so it may function independently of the others in the array, and DC electricity is converted to AC power right there on the roof. There are other solar panels (AC solar modules) on the market that come with microinverters already built in at the manufacturing.

1: Hope springs eternal but rarely comes to pass. It is merely time and new spaces that have prolonged human existence.

2: Duh.

3: Magnetics are the only clean source for transportation at the moment. Until wind/solar can produce their own animating energy (fueling their own birth) then energy will be dirty. Magnetic lift is clean from the start.

4: Good for Colombia.

5: Everything in Gaza is about producing soldiers to fight Israel. Individuals may fool themselves (as most humans do) into believing an activity has some noble purpose but it's actually just to fight better.
