With 16,000 people dead and climbing due to the earthquake in Syria and Turkey, how can religious people still say that there is a kind and merciful god/diety who looks after them?

Spirit world for most Native American tribes, birth-death-reincarnation for Buddhism and Hinduism, death is gain (Paul) for Christians. Most religions are all about afterlife to calm the fear of death. Maybe send some coins for

I have zero sympathy for people who demand ignorance and death. Kill god and shut the fuck up about the disasters. Their tears only make me laugh harder.

I guess in much the same sense that a masochist expresses gratitude to the sadist that beat him. It is not difficult to see how most religions encourage mental sadomasochism.

Most of them will say it was all part of god's plan but no one can tell you what the plan is. Only god knows. This is similar to how god gets a pass while killing everyone on earth except for one family because his book says "people were exceedingly wicked" The unborn were even wicked. The terrible god apparently does not like natural reproduction and I'm sure those killed in the earthquake were guilty of that in some way.

Sarcasm or not, I used to be a believer and I'm sure you can see I will never make that mistake again.
