A friend of mine was victimized by a medium. A channeler. She did a cold read on my friend and led her to believe that she had contacted a dead, beloved aunt. It was my sad duty to introduce my friend to the concept of a cold read. Here's a really fine demo:
When I was younger (and before I had partial blindness) I was very good at reading people. I just needed to watch someone interact for a few minutes I through body language, facial expression and so on , I was able to make assumptions which were almost always true. This si a form of hyper-observance. Nothing supernatural about it.
I've always been the shy quiet one who observes others. I believe that as we evolved we developed instincts to be able to read each others emotions. This was so we could sense danger from out fellow humans. In modern society, we do not pay attention, because by comparison modern society is very safe as compared tothe environments in which we evolved. So, being the quiet kid who watched others rather than interacting, I learned how to use the animal abilities to read people to a point that many thought I was psychic, when I told them things they didnt' think I had any way of knowing, because they had no idea how much their body language gestures and facials expressions told me. I always tole them I wasn't psychic.
However, in retrospect, if I unscrupulous, I could have easily convinced people I was.
The paranormal is not real. Psychics don't exist. They are just another type of con man/woman who uses "magical thinking" like religious leaders do to part you from your money.
BTW, as I mentioned above, I am now partially blind, and can no longer "read" people as I once was able to do, because it worked primarily off of visual cues.
There really are people born with psychic powers, but it's inborn and never used to show off or prove anything. In fact, we all are. In the US, anything not considered "rational" is suppressed and scorned, so not used, but in other countries people frequently use ESP and other powers to communicate. They do in the US also, but don't realize they're doing it, as when horse riders communicate with their mounts mentally.
My sister, mom, and I were born strongly psychic and when my mom wanted me to come downstairs to help her, she'd just contact me mentally. In Haiti we MKs (missionary kids) used esp to coordinate our beach trips since we didn't have phones. I seldom used a bridle or saddle with horses and all of them obeyed my mental commands, even when I was driving them in a horse cart.
They could change gaits, pull over, or go any direction I thought of, even as I was thinking it.
I'm a nonbinary (I don't strongly identify with either gender) androgyne ( I have mixed gender traits), and in my Cherokee tribe I would have been trained as a "two-spirit" shaman, and in fact my daughter is one in her tribal group. As a "two-spirit" androgyne she participates in both men's and women's ceremonies.
By the way, don't bother trolling me, I'll just block you.
Thank you for your story, Personally I do not think Psychic is a word to be applied to what you are describing (too many negative connotations).
Sympathetic intuition or Telepathy for want of a better term is a proven phenomenon, especially between mothers and children, siblings, especially twins, and spouses.
The simple instinctive feeling that something is wrong or is needed, the intuition of being certain of who is on the phone before you answer it, and the mother knowing what her baby needs, all of this has been well tested and documented and simpatico communication between humans and working animals.
I feel it is a natural thing that we have to some extent evolved away in favour of technology but which remains in more agrarian societies to a great extent than those that embraced industrialism.
However the so called Psychic powers, such as remote viewing, mind reading, overpowering another's will, passing mental verbal messages, mental domination, implanting false realities etc.
These all remain firmly in the realm of the fantasist and the magician, having been thoroughly studied and debunked by several intelligence agencies through out the world seeking to weaponized and use for espionage such "paranormal" phenomena.
Not what you are talking about at all.
Nothing bothers me more than deceiving people intentionally or ignorantly for that matter. I grew up believing that we chose our professions based on others needs not on our greed. So sad the self serving people that abuse the trust of others.
I spent some time training with mediums in the SNU it was fascinating, so many are absolutely sincere and believe utterly in their own "powers".
They see what we call "cold reading" as using your intuition and spiritual gifts.
The level of self-deception is incredible.
There were others like myself who could see through it for what it was and could analysis the techniques for exactly what they were and then a good proportion of charlatans training for a career.
@ LenHazzel53 - That is a really fine observation; mediums may actually believe in their own fake supernatural powers. Magicians are known to be a cynical group, having low respect for their audience, but their fakery is obvious to themselves. But what is the SNU?
@fit-in-Spring-TX The Spiritualists' National Union (SNU) is one of the two major denominations of Spiritualism, the other being Greater World, Christian Spiritualism.
They have a loose working relationship but differ greatly in their beliefs and philosophies.
I chose for the purposes of research to train with the SNU since they have a more eclectic approach to mysticism and do not claim to be a wholly Christian organisation, embracing as they do elements of trantrisism, Egyptian spiritualism and various other ideologies.
GWCS on the other hand are a Christian denomination, following the teachings of a mystical being named Zodiac (An admitted pseudonym of a scribe serving in the Jerusalem Temple at the time of Christ) who relayed a new set of "Christian" teachings relating to the afterlife and spirit communication through various mediums between 1920 and 1957.
Quite frankly I found them to be a bit too Mormon-ish in their gullibility, though I did attend and even preside at some of their meetings.
