I find secularism can be very misunderstood sometimes. How would you explain secularism to someone who hasn't heard of it before, and why do you think that it is misunderstood?

I would explain atheism as a lack of belief in a deity/deities. If you can't answer "yes" to the question "do you believe in one or more gods", you're an atheist. Simple as that.

It is so misunderstood because religious "true believers" are afraid of anything which does not uphold their attachment to their dogma.
