"Today, a work of art has the right to exist only if it is created by artists with a morally impeccable past. This exorbitant requirement of absolute virtue makes any cause (feminism, homosexuality, anti-racism) a kind of religion whose inquisitors spend their time hunting down blasphemers, any sin committed damning the sinner for eternity, because the concept of forgiveness of sins is absent in this new religion . We are dealing here with a thinking of a totalitarian nature."
(From the book "La tyrannie vertueuse" by Pierre Jourde ; my translation)
I agree with your general premise there, and have observed such tendencies and actions from both progressives and conservatives alike when a topic comes up that they do not favor and or support. Aside from those who are exclusively independent, the only other group that I've observed who do not partake in that sort of "cancel culture" mentality would be... wait for it... the libertarians. Show me the individual who cares not to engage in the cancel culture and related pseudoreligions, and I could show you someone who is genuinely libertarian.
The only artists I know of that have been airbrushed so to speak have been paedos like Kevin Spacey and Gary Glitter. If you want to make the case for them to be reinstated, I'm all ears. I also note that others walk free for similar crimes like Jimmy Page, Bill Wyman or Jim Jordan but that is no excuse.
There is a danger in that but that danger isn't present in our moment. In our moment it is a corrective measure for a rather sick society. Yin-Yang revolves with every action and consequence of it so the corrective should be supported until it becomes an ascendant problem. Then it should be addressed by support for the other side of the duality. In our time Dems are the corrective for Con Theocratic tendency.
Umm, what exactly are you talking about? Roman Polanski kept making movies, for just one example.
