Here is an excerpt of something I wrote some 28+ years ago and it's still pertinent today:

"To go back to the old fashioned Christianity, as the Right Wingers are pushing America to do, would be a mistake. The Christian Coalition blames feminism and the human rights movement for the decline in Christian values and, in turn, holds the decline in Christian values responsible for this moral decay.

The Christian Coalition pines for the lost Christian America. How far back do they want to go? Back before there were any human rights? Back when spousal abuse was tolerated and incest was swept under the rug? Back when women had to put up with sexual harassment? Back to racial discrimination? Back before women and nonwhites were allowed to vote? Do they want to bring back the Ku Klux Klan? Slavery?

Do they admire the Christian colonists who vanquished the Native people and stole their land, livelihood and spirituality? Aren't we a nation that has grown to denounce such depravity?

There is so much shameful behavior in our Christian-American history that it is hard for an educated person to understand why anyone would want to continue paying homage to such an institution. We have outgrown the "values" in the mythos that allowed those things to happen.

The Right Wingers want to teach creationism in our schools and take out sex education. They want to rid the country of Freethinkers and scientists. They want to ignore the fact that America is a melting pot of many proud cultures. Their aim is to infiltrate our government and continue on their quest to take over the world with a Hitler-like mentality.

The Religious Right wants to squeeze America into the narrow-minded confines of the Church, like an old pair of shoes. We have outgrown those shoes. They pinch too many toes. We need a new pair that can accommodate our grown-up feet."

Who knew these 30 years later, we would still be wondering these same questions!

The Good Old Days were only really good for a few. It is mostly a nostalgic illusion of a nation in decline, sad to say. France went through a similar nostalgia when it began to fade as a power. It took a world war to snap Germany out of it. It is easy to get lost in the past when the future looks dim.

The simple answer is because 40% of the country are racist idiots. He made it okay to be a racist idiot so now they're all out

He is so popular among his followers because he used the same tactics as did Huey Long in the 193x. Long said, "Every once in a while, you gotta stir up their bowels and let them know hey are alive." As Long did he dredged yo the fears, bigotry, ethnocentrism, and xenophobia from the very depths of their bowels and played them like a fiddle -- and they loved it. That is all that the idiot Trump does.

So what is wrong with gin and tonic ?

Of course, and if the fascists win in 2024, our pro-democracy offspring in maybe two centuries will be able to. rebel and replace the fascism with a better democracy than we now have.
